John E. McMurry received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation Fellow. If you have to use this textbook, I'd recommend getting the Klein Organic Chemistry textbook too. I often would use the Klein textbook to help me solve problems in McMurry because I think the information is organized a bit better in Klein. I really hate that McMurry doesn't use line drawings for long carbon chains, but that's my personal preference.
Important information for the access card: if your professor is using Cengage through Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, Desire 2 Learn, or your school's learning management system, then this access card will work. BUT, if your professor is using Cengage through the Cengage website, this access card will not work. I unfortunately bought this access card and book package thinking that it would work and it didn't in my case, so ask your professor before to avoid this.
I have been a university professor for over 30 years. I bought the first edition of McMurry's Organic Chemistry and loved it. It has become thicker and it has many more pages than that first edition, but of course it covers many more topics. This book has been my personal favorite over the years. Other OC textbooks that I like are Fox and Whitesell's and Bruice's. The one I don't particularly care for is Vollhardt's: too much stuff crammed in the book and a writing style that doesn't make it very easy for students to follow. It's fine as a reference, but in my opinion it's not that great for those who have to study directly from the book. But of course you may disagree with me! At any rate, I think that McMurry's OC is a fantastic book. Period.
This is such a wonderful and very helpful tool for doing well in organic chemistry as it helped me a lot when I took two semesters of organic chemistry, as well as did the solutions manual for the textbook and do purchase the textbook and solutions manual together as both are a must in order to be successful in organic I and II! There were a few instances within certain chapters of the text that could have been just a bit more specific while providing just a little bit more detail, is my only other feedback and/or comment that I would like to add on and point out. Thank you so much for this wonderful resource along with the solutions manual that goes with this textbook!
This book was required for my organic chemistry class. I thought it was okay for the course. I also had bought Wade organic chemistry book. With those two books and the Second Language books, I finished with an A.
Pretty good book. Do the practice problems!! Some things aren't explained as much as I'd like around chapters 6-8, so you can't really do some of those practice problems because you don't know what they're talking about.
Great way to purchase books for college at a rental cost.
This book really explained the information in a way as to give understanding.
